Plot summary
During the Civil War, Jonah Hex disobeys an order from Quentin Turnbull. Turnbull retaliates by burning Hex's home, killing Hex's wife and child, and branding Hex's face. The Crow people heal Hex, and he gains the ability to temporarily bring back and speak with the dead. With warrants on his own head, Hex becomes a bounty hunter. In 1876, Turnbull's gang seizes parts of an experimental weapon from a train. President Ulysses S. Grant orders Lieutenant Grass to locate Hex and employ him against Turnbull. Grass's men find Hex with Lilah Black, a prostitute, and tell him Turnbull is alive. Hex accepts the task of stopping Turnbull before the weapon can be used.

- Before Josh Brolin was cast, actor Thomas Jane campaigned for the title role by hiring a makeup artist to transform his own appearance into Jonah Hex; he lost the part but ended up voicing the character in the 2010 animated short DC Showcase: Jonah Hex instead.
- Josh Brolin later said he hated making the film, recalling that at one point the crew had to reshoot 66 pages of script in just 12 days, and he blamed the movie's failure on studio interference during post-production.
