Plot summary
As a boy, Kai is found in the woods near Wakkanai and taken into the household of Lord Asano, who rules the Akō Domain. Mika, Asano's daughter, loves him, though the samurai of the domain hold his mixed parentage in contempt. Lord Kira serves the Shōgun as master of ceremonies and wants Akō for himself; the shapeshifting kitsune Mizuki is in his service. A kirin attacks the lord's hunting party, and Kai seizes a fallen sword and kills the beast, then sees a white fox with eyes of two different colors. At a visit by the Shōgun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, Kai picks out a concubine whose eyes match the fox's, and he understands what she is. Oishi, Asano's principal counselor, will not hear his warning about a witch in Kira's household.
