Plot summary
GNN journalist Buck Williams reports from Israel on a new technology that lets food grow where the soil is poor, and interviews the scientist Chaim Rosenzweig behind it. When Arab and Russian jets attack, Buck films as the raiders are destroyed. In New York, pilot Rayford Steele takes a last-minute flight to London, missing his son's birthday, while his daughter Chloe heads off to college exams. Mid-flight, passengers on Rayford's plane disappear, and crewless planes and cars are reported on the ground. Hattie Durham, a flight attendant, tells Rayford she is leaving for a job at the United Nations. Rayford turns the plane back to Chicago, where Buck asks him to fly on to New York and Rayford instead goes home to his family.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Left Behind: The Movie (2000)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Tim LaHaye, who co-wrote the novel, was so unhappy with the quality of the film and its sequels that he sued Namesake Entertainment and Cloud Ten Pictures for breach of contract. The dispute was settled in July 2008, and part of the deal gave him the chance to remake the series.
- Israel was played by a quarry in Ontario. Mike Hackenberger of Bowmanville Zoo, who supplied the animals, said camels sell the look, because you see a camel on sand and you know it is desert, and that without them the movie would have been a disaster.
- Lacey Chabert was first given the role of Chloe Steele and dropped out over scheduling conflicts, which is how Janaya Stephens came to play her.
