Plot summary
Andie Bradley trains as a gymnast in Portland with a place on the Olympic team as her goal. A leading coach in Seattle offers her the chance to work with him, and she accepts, moving to Seattle to join his team. At her first session the coach scrutinizes her weight, and she feels pressure to lose pounds. Her diet starts out sensible, then tightens into severe calorie restriction as hunger keeps breaking through. A teammate on the squad, Leslie Reynolds, describes a way to eat freely without gaining weight by making herself vomit after meals. Andie's mother, Janet, notices the change in her weight.
