Plot summary

Henri Roubier, a French promoter, has signed an agreement with the Italian Enrico Mazzini that gives the two men a stranglehold on European highways. Driving home through the south, he unwillingly takes in a hitchhiker and a young woman whose engine has broken down, and the hitchhiker makes him drop them both at Cassis. That night, worn out by his talkative passengers, Roubier misses a right turn on the road, and the woman's dog lands on the accelerator. The three of them come to in the morning on a pine tree, lodged against a cliff above the sea, with Roubier struggling to calm the young woman, who is in a panic and wants to jump.
