Plot summary
Ludovic Cruchot, a strait-laced gendarme from a small French village, is posted to Saint-Tropez, a seaside commune on the Riviera, under Command Sergeant Major Gerber, who tolerates no backtalk from his outspoken subordinate. Cruchot's daughter Nicole adapts quickly, mixing with carefree local youths who openly defy her father's authority. When they ridicule her, she tells them that her father is a wealthy American called Ferguson who has arrived in port with his yacht and owns a red Mustang. The brigade, meanwhile, is confronted by persistent nude swimmers, and a lookout warns them each time. After several failures, Cruchot devises a plan of his own.
