Plot summary

Six patients at Spring Valley Mental Hospital are chosen for interviews with the psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Marcus, who is writing a book. Dr. Paul Victor permits the sessions, and the orderlies Shane and Kyle follow his orders. Marcus believes the patients' psychoses grew out of earlier trauma, and in each session he draws on an element of a patient's past to provoke panic. The patients recount what happened to them, and their accounts take in conditions from amnesia to hallucinations and horror staples such as zombies, vampires, and ghosts. Marcus answers each testimony with sharp, cruel rebukes, calling the psychoses fake.
