Plot summary
Louise is nine. Each summer her parents leave her at her grandparents' country house for ten days. She passes the tusk of a pachyderm on her way to her room. At night the wood knots in the ceiling look like eyes, and she has to kill the monsters before she can sleep. The old floorboards outside her door creak. Her grandmother tells her the room is safe, that nothing can happen to her at their house, and to go to sleep. Louise hides in the wallpaper and closes her eyes.

- The imagery was designed to inspire a mixed feeling of gentleness and unease, with disquiet built through framing and composition: the sky is virtually non-existent in the film, or blocked by the grandparents' house or a tree to evoke the character's lack of escape.
