Plot summary
In a small village, the children decide to stage a giant snowball fight during the winter school break. The prize is a snow fort: whichever side holds it when the break ends wins. Luke, eleven, is set to lead one team, but the group cannot agree on who should lead the other. Snowballs meant to provoke two other children, Piers and Frankie, hit Sophie, the new girl, whom Luke likes. She takes charge of the rival side and has an elaborate fort built.
