Plot summary
Madame Souza raises her orphan grandson Champion in France. They are watching a vintage variety program when the broadcast is interrupted, and Souza asks whether the film has ended, but Champion only switches the channel. He is melancholy, and she tries to cheer him with an old piano, a dog named Bruno, and an electric train set, but he stays indifferent. While tidying his room, she finds a book of cyclist photographs and buys him a tricycle. He becomes an obsessive cyclist, and years of training carry him to the Tour de France. There two mobsters in a Citroën van seize him and two other contestants and take them across the Atlantic. Souza follows on a pedalo with Bruno, Champion's fat hound.
