Plot summary
After Franco's victory in the Spanish Civil War, the cartoonist Josep Bartolí leaves Spain in February 1939. He is one of thousands of Republican refugees who cross into France, and the French government confines them in concentration camps. In the camps the refugees must build their own shelters, eat the horses that carried them out of Spain and do without clean water or hygiene. Josep draws against Franco's regime and shares the hunger and the mistreatment of the other internees. A gendarme, Serge, secretly gives him a pencil and paper, and the two men, kept apart by barbed wire, become friends.
