Plot summary
Sasha is fifteen, an aristocrat in Saint Petersburg, and her grandfather Oloukine, a celebrated explorer, has not been heard from since he sailed for the North Pole aboard the Davaï, the icebreaker the Tsar paid for. The Tsar offers a million rubles for proof of where the ship lies. Sasha, about to host her debutante ball, overhears Prince Tomsky mock her grandfather and plot to keep his name off a library wing built for him. At the ball she points to her grandfather's notes, which record a different route than the Tsar's advisors assumed. Tomsky storms out, the guests follow, and her father loses the post in Rome and blames her. Sasha runs away to the coast with the notes and bargains for passage on the Norge, a vessel with a reinforced hull.
