Plot summary
The Devil offers a miller riches in exchange for what stands behind his mill. Gold flows through the mill, and the miller learns his daughter had been playing in the apple tree behind it. When the Devil comes to collect her, she is too clean for him to take. Shut in the apple tree with dogs guarding her, she keeps her hands clean, and the Devil orders the miller to cut them off; she consents. Even her arm stumps stay clean when she weeps on them, so the Devil still cannot take her. She leaves the mill and wanders the forest until she reaches a river, where pear trees grow in a garden on the far bank. The goddess of the river carries her across and tells her a prince owns the garden.
