Trailer

Plot summary

A painter abandoned a canvas before it was finished, and the figures he left behind live in a society sorted by how complete they are. The Toupins are painted through and through and hold the chateau. The Pafinis lack a few colors and keep to the gardens. The Reufs were left as bare sketches; the Toupins treat them as outcasts and hunt them. Nobody knows why the painter stopped. Three friends, one from each class, set out to find him and ask him to finish the canvas, hoping a completed picture will end the divisions between them. Their search takes them off their own canvas and through other paintings from the painter's career, a Venetian period among them, and toward his studio, where they mean to make their request.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Painting (2011)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Instead of a storyboard, Jean-François Laguionie drew more than 2000 drawings, one for every shot, in a notebook, then filmed and edited them together with software to fix each shot's duration; the work took two years after the character designs.
  • The look of the unfinished Reufs and Pafinis copies real canvas preparation, imitating the grey and ochre tones of the gesso layer applied before painting, a texture the film's computer animation found hard to reproduce.
  • Screenwriter Anik Le Ray first imagined a story about a painter and his model, but judged that too thin for a film likely to interest children, and added the idea of an unfinished painting whose characters stay at different degrees of completion.
  • Characters inside the paintings were modelled in computer graphics but rendered to mimic flat two-dimensional painting, with perspective minimised throughout so that every image would read as if painted by hand.
  • Jean-François Laguionie set the Painter's career in the 1920s-1930s and took his influences from Chagall, Matisse, Derain, Bonnard, Picasso and Modigliani, choosing that era for its figurative painting before abstraction but keeping the real painters' references non-explicit.
