Along the way, the youngest boy Sovanh and his grandmother are separated from the group, and the guards forbid Chou to search for them. The family settles in a town where cousin Sok has joined the revolutionaries and the place has become a commune. Possessions the family cannot hide are taken, the work is hard and there is little food. Chou is told her son is in a different labor camp and is not allowed to see him.
