Plot summary
In 1970s Iran, Marjane 'Marji' Satrapi watches events through her young eyes and her idealistic family of a long dream being fulfilled of the hated Shah's defeat in the Iranian Revolution of 1979. However as Marji grows up, she witnesses first hand how the new Iran, now ruled by Islamic fundamentalists, has become a repressive tyranny on its own. With Marji dangerously refusing to remain silent at this injustice, her parents send her abroad to Vienna to study for a better life. However, this change proves an equally difficult trial with the young woman finding herself in a different culture loaded with abrasive characters and profound disappointments that deeply trouble her. Even when she returns home, Marji finds that both she and homeland have changed too much and the young woman and her loving family must decide where she truly belongs.

- Before its Cannes debut, the government-connected Iran Farabi Foundation told the French embassy in Tehran the film gave an unrealistic picture of the Islamic Revolution. Iranian authorities still allowed limited Tehran screenings in February 2008, with six scenes censored for sexual content.
- After Tunisia's Nessma TV showed the film on 7 October 2011, a demonstration marched on the station, and its owner Nabil Karoui was tried in Tunis on charges of "violating sacred values" and "disturbing the public order".
- Marjane Satrapi became the first woman to be nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 80th Academy Awards, for a film that was also France's entry for Best Foreign Language Film.
- Producers Marc-Antoine Robert and Xavier Regault were so against making an animated film, which they found too difficult, that they gave Marjane Satrapi options to avoid it; Robert offered to write her an original script instead.
- Animator Marc Jousset said Marjane Satrapi's unusual working method was to be filmed playing out every scene herself, which gave the animators an accurate guide to how they should work.
- In June 2007 the Bangkok International Film Festival dropped the film after its director, Chattan Kunjara na Ayudhya, met the Iranian embassy and agreed that not showing it would benefit both countries.
- Locating a team to draw the images was hard because traditional animators "hardly exist in France anymore", even as the film stuck to a traditional graphic style.
