A surprise party greets Chris on his return to his small town after twenty years in prison for murder. Carol, his former high school teacher, is there; she had been his confidant while he was locked up and had pressed for his release. Chris is thirty-eight. Carol is married and has a teenage daughter, Hildy. She urges him to meet other women, and he looks for work. He wants more of her time than she can give, and she is considering helping another inmate win parole. At breakfast at her house, Chris gets along with Hildy until Carol's husband, Tom, arrives.
