Plot summary
Daniel Kintner and Susan Watkins take a scuba-diving vacation together. On the second day they join a group dive from a boat. While underwater, the two briefly separate from the other divers. When the group returns, a miscount makes the dive master believe everyone is aboard, and the boat leaves, stranding Daniel and Susan. They surface to find the boat gone, floating miles from shore with sharks below them.

- Open Water's filmmakers used live sharks rather than the mechanical sharks built for Jaws or the computer-generated fish of Deep Blue Sea, aiming for authentic shark behavior instead of the exaggerated behavior typical of many shark films.
- At the audition, Chris Kentis and Laura Lau made it clear to Blanchard Ryan and Daniel Travis that there was going to be nudity in the film and that it was non-negotiable.
