Plot summary
David Basner is a successful advertising executive in Chicago. After a vacation, he returns to work and his father Max, a career salesman, tells him that Lorraine, his mother, has left Max after 36 years of marriage. Max then loses his job after 35 years in the garment industry. David supports his emotionally fragile mother and his bitter, aging father. He is also working on an ad campaign for Colonial Airlines, which Andrew Woolridge owns, and success could earn him a partnership. He also becomes involved with Woolridge's daughter, Cheryl Ann Wayne. His ex-girlfriend Donna is sympathetic but tells him he should grow up; David fears that becoming less childlike would harm his advertising work. Both parents increasingly depend on him, and the distraction affects his work.
