Plot summary
Norma Jean Dougherty comes from a simple background, and she is ambitious for a career as a star. Marilyn Monroe is the sex star she grows into, and in dream-like scenes the two of them appear together while Norma Jean sometimes taunts the woman she has become. To push her career along, Norma Jean takes one lover after another. The biographical drama follows her from the early years when she is Norma Jean Dougherty to the years when she is Marilyn Monroe, and it is drawn from a book about the private life of Marilyn Monroe.

- While filming, Mira Sorvino's small dog Deer escaped when a crew member let it out of her trailer at the International School of Los Angeles; the dog bolted down a hill into the neighborhood, and Sorvino drove the area nightly calling for it and posting reward notices.
- A cherry-adorned dress Mira Sorvino wears in the film, taken from The Misfits (1961), was actually worn by Marilyn Monroe, and costume collector Gene London provided it to the production.
