Plot summary
Years earlier, in the Mojave Desert, the sorcerer Nix gathers disciples in an old house and plans to sacrifice a girl. Philip Swann and Caspar Quaid help stop him; Nix's assistant Butterfield escapes, and Swann binds Nix in an ironwork mask and buries him in an unmarked grave. In New York thirteen years later, private detective Harry D'Amour, who has handled supernatural cases, takes an insurance fraud job in Los Angeles. There he finds Quaid, now a fortune teller, dying of knife wounds after an attack by Butterfield, and hears a warning that the Puritan is coming. Philip has become a celebrated stage illusionist; his wife Dorothea hires D'Amour to protect him from Nix's loyal followers.

- Barker told Cinescape in 1995 that halfway through shooting someone came in with a newspaper headline about mass deaths in a cult in Switzerland, the Order of the Solar Temple, and that the villain Nix is the embodiment of the charismatic leader who says "Follow me to death".
- MGM insisted on removing roughly twelve and a half minutes from the film, and Barker conceded as long as a director's cut could be released later.
- Clive Barker claimed he picked Famke Janssen based purely on her photograph, and that he considered Scott Bakula to be the perfect casting for D'Amour in both appearance and manner.
