Plot summary
At a house party in Fairfield, California, Brandon Sinclair takes out his ouija board and uses it with his ex-girlfriend Linda Brewster to reach David, a ten-year-old boy he says he has contacted before. Linda's boyfriend Jim Morar insults the spirit, and the tires on Brandon's car are slashed. The next day Linda uses the board Brandon left behind, and David tells her where her lost engagement ring is. She keeps going back to the board on her own, and the spirit leaves her nauseated; she and Jim take her symptoms as a sign that she is pregnant. Brandon brings the psychic medium Zarabeth to the house to make contact with the spirit, and to force it out if that proves necessary.

- The film was shot under the working title Ouija but had to be re-titled during production after Parker Brothers, which owned the trademark name, tried to stop one of their boards being used or mentioned; the production company put up a $50,000 bond against potential litigation.
- Writer-director Kevin Tenney dropped out of his University of Southern California program just four units short of a master's degree in order to begin shooting Witchboard.
- Some of the crew had significant problems inside the house used for filming, such as bumping into objects that were not there, as well as objects that moved that no one else around could have moved.
