Plot summary
In Castle Rock, Maine, young Thad Beaumont collapses, and surgeons operating on a growth in his brain find an undeveloped twin inside it. Twenty-three years on, Thad teaches a writing class at the local university, is married to Liz, and has twin babies. He writes serious literary novels under his own name; the violent thrillers that sell best carry the pen name George Stark. A reporter from New York, Fred Clawson, confronts him with the secret and demands monthly payments to stay quiet. Thad and Liz go public, gathering reporters, showing them the lake house where the Stark books are written, and staging a mock burial for Stark in the local cemetery.
