Plot summary
Nightmares of Jason Voorhees have followed Tommy Jarvis through a series of psychiatric hospitals since he killed the killer as a child. Now he is transferred to the Pinehurst Halfway House, a rural facility in New Jersey run by Dr. Matt Letter and his assistant Pam Roberts. There he meets other teenage residents: lovers Eddie and Tina, stutterer Jake, punk Violet, serious Robin, compulsive eater Joey, and young Reggie, whose grandfather George cooks for the house. Their neighbor Ethel dislikes the group, and Matt forbids them from leaving the grounds. A violent patient, Vic, kills Joey with an axe and is arrested. That night murders begin in the area, and Sheriff Cal Tucker wonders whether Jason has come back, while suspicion settles on Tommy.

- The production was cast under a fake title, Repetition, and lead actor John Shepherd spent months volunteering at a real state mental hospital to prepare for his role, only discovering afterward that he had actually signed on for the fifth Friday the 13th film.
- Corey Feldman could only appear as a cameo because he was busy filming The Goonies that same year; his brief scene was shot in the backyard of his family's Los Angeles home using a rain machine on his one day off.

The film was initially going to set up a new trilogy with a different villain for the series, but after a disappointing reception from fans and a steep decline in box-office receipts, Jason Voorhees was brought back for Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives in 1986.- This installment is the only film in the Friday the 13th series to give its killer's hockey mask a design with two blue triangles pointing downward, rather than the series' usual three red triangles pointing upward.
