Plot summary
A love affair in Florence draws Emma into the world Tancredi moves through: long days in the hills, sun-bleached afternoons on the coast. The two become engaged. What follows is her introduction to a family and a class with rules of its own, where she learns the manners and duties her new circle expects of a wife. Around her are the households of Italy's nobility, kept closed to outsiders and arranged to stay that way. The beauty that drew her in belongs to the world that now measures her, and the engagement leaves her little room to decide what she wants.
