Plot summary
Tubal-cain kills Lamech, Noah's father, over a hill he wants to mine, and Noah flees. Years pass, and Noah and his wife Naameh raise three sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth. When a drop falls and a flower sprouts at once, and a night dream shows him the Earth under water, Noah takes the family to his grandfather Methuselah for guidance. On the road they find Ila, the only survivor of a massacre, and adopt her. Tubal-cain's men chase them until they enter the dark country of the Watchers, angels who fell to Earth and were left as creatures of stone. Methuselah hands Noah a seed from Eden; planted, it brings out a spring and a forest in moments, and the Watchers, convinced that he serves the Creator, agree to help him build an ark.

- Before Russell Crowe was cast as Noah, Darren Aronofsky offered the part to Christian Bale and Michael Fassbender, but both were committed elsewhere. Dakota Fanning was originally cast as Ila and left over a scheduling conflict, and Julianne Moore was considered for the role of Naameh.
- Noah was banned in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia and Indonesia, whose governments saw it as contradicting the teachings of Islam. Paramount said censors in Qatar, Bahrain and the UAE confirmed the film would not release in their countries.
- In September 2012, Russell Crowe and a friend, on a break from filming on Long Island, had been kayaking for several hours when the Coast Guard rescued them near Cold Spring Harbor.
- Darren Aronofsky and Paramount fought over the final cut, with the studio test-screening unfinished, unscored and alternate versions against his wishes, drawing worrisome responses from largely religious audiences. In February 2014 Paramount announced Aronofsky's own version would be the final cut.
- Aronofsky said he and his crew had to create an entire animal kingdom for the film using no real animals, instead building "slightly tweaked" versions of real creatures.
- To make the Watchers move realistically, visual effects supervisor Ben Snow and Darren Aronofsky studied footage of real ballet dancers from the director's Oscar-winning film Black Swan.
