Plot summary
A plague killed most of the children in the United States, and the survivors developed abilities that the government sorts by color. Oranges, who can control minds, are considered so dangerous that they are killed; the rest are confined to camps. Ruby Daly, an Orange, hides her classification inside one of those camps. Six years later, the Children's League, a resistance group, gets her out of the camp. Cate, who works at the camp, hands Ruby a panic button for emergencies. Ruby leaves the League with Suzume, a mute Yellow the others call Zu, who introduces her to Liam, a Blue, and to his friend Chubs, a Green. The three let her join them as they travel toward East River, a safe haven said to be led by an Orange known as the Slip Kid.
