Plot summary
Alex Martin, a photojournalist headed to Denver for her wedding, and Dr. Ben Bass, a neurosurgeon with a surgery waiting in Baltimore, both find their flights canceled by a storm. Alex proposes they share a charter plane, and the pilot Walter takes them up with his dog aboard. Mid-flight, Walter suffers a stroke at the controls, and the aircraft goes down in the High Uintas Wilderness, on a snow-covered mountainside. Ben, Alex and the dog survive, but Alex's leg is badly hurt and Ben treats it. With food running short and no sign of rescue, the two wait by the wreckage; Alex doubts anyone will come and wants to descend the mountain, while Ben argues for staying put.

- Michael Fassbender was set to star as the surgeon Ben Bass from March 2012 but dropped out by September 2014 over a scheduling conflict, and Charlie Hunnam replaced him. Margot Robbie came aboard as the journalist Alex, then dropped out, Rosamund Pike entered talks, and by December 2015 both Hunnam and Pike had left.
- Much of the shoot took place in Canada near the Alberta-British Columbia border, where director Hany Abu-Assad and the crew drove 40 minutes to reach base camp and, when the weather allowed, flew the last stretch to the mountaintop by helicopter with their supplies.
