Plot summary
Bill and Quinn Brody are storm chasers. When their son William is born, Quinn stays home to monitor the weather while Bill keeps going out. During one chase, Bill ignores Quinn's plea to get out of the bears cage and is killed by a tornado. Years later Quinn cleans houses in Florida and William, a teenager, helps her, while she tries to discourage his interest in storm chasing. He is expelled after testing his parents' tornado-detecting instrument on the school roof during a thunderstorm. A chase log arrives from Roy Cameron, Bill's former chase partner, and William hitchhikes to the return address in Texas. Roy works for Brody Storm Chase Tours, run by the abrasive Zane Rogers, who uses the Brody name to sell trips to paying guests. William is allowed to join a chase.
