Plot summary
The Winfield family has just settled into a roomier home in a small Indiana town, and only George, a banker, welcomes the change. His wife Alice, their grown tomboy daughter Margie, their troublemaking young son Wesley and the housekeeper Stella would rather be elsewhere. Margie's mood lifts when she meets Bill Sherman, the neighbor across the street, home on a break from Indiana University. Attracted to him, she turns from baseball to learning how to dance and behave like a proper young woman. Bill's unconventional views, including his lack of belief in marriage or money, put him at odds with George, the local bank vice president. George also favors another suitor for his daughter.
