Plot summary
Retired Marion and Tom share a home in the seaside town of Peacehaven. Word arrives that Patrick, a friend from decades before, has had a stroke, and Marion brings him into the house to care for him, while Tom refuses to acknowledge him. Going through Patrick's belongings, Marion finds a journal from the 1950s that returns her to Brighton, where Patrick, a museum curator, met Tom, a policeman, after an accident. Patrick left his card and Tom visited the museum; a sitting for a drawing drew them together. The law made their love a crime and Tom, fearing for his job, kept it secret. He also courted Marion, a schoolteacher, and she and Patrick became friends.
