Plot summary
Dr. Jeff Peters, a scientist who cannot stand other people, dreams of a long solo voyage into deep space. He builds Ulysses, an android that looks exactly like him, to make the trip in his place. Image consultant Frankie Stone is brought in for public relations, and Dr. Ramdas, the project manager, and Jeff explain the work to her. Part of her job is to spend time with the android and humanize him for the sponsors in Congress. In her company, Ulysses develops feelings and social skills that exceed Jeff's own, and he grows more at ease among people than his creator is.
