Plot summary
Steven Mills is a widower who beams radio signals toward distant stars. One of them reaches Cosine N to the 8th, and the planet's gravity goes out of balance. Its people send Celeste to find out whether the signal was an attack. Bag, a tentacled device with one eye and a mind of its own, comes along disguised as a designer purse and can produce any object, from diamonds to dresses, in an instant. Celeste arrives at a party given by Steven's playboy brother Ron and draws attention by repeating television catchphrases and slogans she thinks are current. Ordinary human tasks, such as cooking, defeat her. Jessie, Steven's thirteen-year-old daughter, is pleased that her father has met someone.
