Plot summary
Muhammad Ali is at the top of his boxing career when he is called up for service in the Vietnam War. He refuses to report and asks to be recognized as a conscientious objector, and the dispute becomes a legal battle that lands at the Supreme Court as Clay v. United States. Behind closed doors, the justices take up the question of how to rule. Chief Justice Warren Burger and John Marshall Harlan are among them, along with Thurgood Marshall, Harry Blackmun, Potter Stewart, Byron White, Hugo Black and William O. Douglas. Harlan's law clerk, a composite figure, becomes closely involved in the deliberations.
