Plot summary
P.R. Irwin, a politician, is in an arrangement with a Russian businessman who wants Dublin's Moore Street market cleared to make room for a shopping center. The stalls are being pushed out one by one, and Agnes Brown's fruit and vegetable stand is next: a back-tax demand from her grandmother's time arrives, and a man acting for Irwin offers to purchase the stall, clearing the debt. Winnie McGoogan tells the other traders what was offered, so Agnes stays and the family searches for a way to raise the money. Philomena Nine Warts says her grandmother, Mary Moccasin, stood beside Agnes' grandmother when the payment was made at the tax office, so nothing should be owed. Agnes' son Dermot and his friend Buster Brady go looking for the paperwork.
