Stanley Clements
Biography
Stanley Clements was an American actor and comedian. He was born on Long Island, New York, and decided on show business while in grammar school. After touring in vaudeville and working in radio, he joined the Major Bowes Amateur Hour. 20th Century-Fox signed him in 1941, and he played teenagers in several B pictures. Loaned to Monogram Pictures in 1942, he took the nickname Stash for the East Side Kids series and appeared in Ghosts on the Loose (1943). His best-known role was Tony Scaponi in Going My Way (1944), and he had success as a jockey in Salty O'Rourke. Following U.S. Army service, he moved into adult roles in lower-budget films such as Johnny Holiday. In 1956 he replaced Leo Gorcey as the ringleader of The Bowery Boys, Stanislaus Duke Coveleskie, and was part of the series' last seven entries. He also appeared in The More the Merrier (1943).

About the name
Monogram Pictures borrowed Clements in 1942. In the East Side Kids series, he went by the nickname Stash and appeared as one of the kids in Smart Alecks, 'Neath Brooklyn Bridge, and Ghosts on the Loose.
Big break
When the series needed a new ringleader after Gorcey, producer Ben Schwalb asked Clements to take the part of Stanislaus "Duke" Coveleskie. Clements co-starred in the last seven Bowery Boys comedies, starting with Fighting Trouble.
