Plot summary
Grace Bennett, a Texas high school student, waits tables with her friend Emma Perkins to pay for a graduation trip to Paris. Grace's stepfather covers the cost of sending his daughter Meg along, and Emma joins the trip despite a marriage proposal from her boyfriend Owen. The package turns out badly: one cramped room and a tour that rushes past the sights. Left behind at the Eiffel Tower, the three take shelter in a hotel, where staff and photographers mistake Grace for Cordelia Winthrop-Scott, a British heiress who has skipped a charity auction. They spend the night in her suite.

- Monte Carlo is loosely based on the novel Headhunters by Jules Bass, about four New Jersey women who pretend to be wealthy heiresses while searching for rich husbands in Monte Carlo; Fox bought the film rights to the novel in 1999, three years prior to the novel's publication.
- The Butterworths were fired and Tom Bezucha was hired to direct and co-write; he and Maria Maggenti turned in a draft by July 2007 starring Kidman as one of three Midwestern schoolteachers, but in 2010 executives had the film rewritten again for a more youthful spin.
- In March 2010 it was announced that Selena Gomez had been cast as one of the film's leads following the script's rewrite, and for the role Gomez spent several weeks learning to play polo and practicing how to fake an English accent.
- Monte Carlo was shot in Budapest and Dunakeszi in Hungary, Paris, Harghita in Romania and Monte Carlo itself, filming from May 5 to July 7, 2010, and it was the first film to use the film studio Raleigh Studios Budapest.
