They were childhood friends, then drifted apart over nine years, after the day they found the corpse of a local lawyer who had killed himself following his divorce. In high school Margo is popular and adventurous; Quentin is unassertive and unpopular, and spends his time with his friends Ben and Radar. One night Margo comes through his window and asks him to join her for a night of revenge: her boyfriend Jase has been sleeping with her friend Becca. After buying supplies, the two play humiliating pranks on Jase, Becca and their friends, among them Margo's best friend Lacey. The following morning Margo is absent from school, and her family does not file a missing persons report, since she has run away before.
