Edith Barrett
Biography
Edith Barrett was an American actress who became a romantic star on Broadway and in New England summer stock during the 1920s and 1930s. Born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, she entered show business at 16 in Walter Hampden's production of Cyrano de Bergerac and appeared with Hampden in Caponsacchi. In the 1930s she performed with Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre troupe. Her Broadway roles included Pompelia in Caponsacchi and Sara Moonlight in Mrs. Moonlight, which she toured more than 500 times; a New York Times review of that performance carried the headline A Star Is Born. She played Anne Brontë in Moor Born and Katherine O'Shea in Parnell. Barrett began her Hollywood career as a character actress in Ladies in Retirement (1941). She was best remembered as Mrs. Rand in I Walked with a Zombie (1943) and also appeared in The Song of Bernadette (1943), Jane Eyre (1943), and Ruthless (1948). She retired after The Swan (1956) and died in 1977.
