Plot summary
Christy and Kevin Beam live in Burleson, Texas with their daughters Abbie, Anna, and Adelynn, and the family is active in their Baptist church. When Anna starts vomiting constantly and cannot hold down food, doctors first suggest lactose intolerance. Christy insists on more tests, and a pediatrician finds an abdominal obstruction that requires immediate surgery. Anna is left with intestinal pseudo-obstruction, unable to eat without feeding tubes. The doctor mentions Dr. Samuel Nurko, a pediatric gastroenterologist in Boston, but warns the wait could be months. Congregation members suggest the illness is punishment for sin, and Christy stops attending church. She takes Anna to Boston anyway, where a receptionist says they cannot be seen without an appointment.
