Plot summary

Ariana Berlin is a promising young gymnast who excels on the bars, and her work draws the attention of college scouts and of Valorie Kondos Field, the UCLA coach. Driving home from a meet with her mother, Ariana is in a car accident that leaves her with fractures, a concussion and a femur rebuilt around a metal rod; her training and her Olympic plans are gone. She works at walking again in physical therapy, where she meets Michelle, a physician there. Her best friend Isla, who has lived in Ariana's shadow and is watched closely by a father with an Olympic medal, takes silver at the Games and joins the UCLA gymnastics program on a scholarship. Michelle brings Ariana to a dance party, where she meets a breakdancing troupe whose stunts, she can see, are likely to injure them.
