Plot summary
In 2000 Alvin Tsang moved into a small Los Angeles apartment with his father, and there he started going through a box of old videotapes and the family photo album. He had stayed behind in Hong Kong with his father when he was six, while his mother and two siblings settled in the United States; his father worked long hours to save enough for the rest of the family to follow. Those three years apart, and the divorce that followed, left Alvin trying to work out what broke the household and to mend his ties with each of his parents. The account draws on home movies, interviews with the family, archival news film of the 1997 handover of Hong Kong, and a trip back to Hong Kong that Alvin made with his family.
