Plot summary
Vincent van Gogh's death leaves the postman Joseph Roulin uneasy, because the painter's letters had lately described a calm, ordinary mood. He sends his son Armand to Paris with the last letter, addressed to Theo van Gogh. There the art supplier Père Tanguy tells Armand that Theo outlived his brother by only six months and points Armand toward Auvers-sur-Oise and Dr. Paul Gachet, who had taken Van Gogh in after the asylum and attended the funeral. The doctor is away, so Armand lodges at the same inn Van Gogh used and meets Adeline Ravoux, its temporary proprietress, who had been fond of the painter. She sends him to the local boatman, who tells him that Van Gogh spent much time with Marguerite, Dr. Gachet's sheltered daughter.

- Each of the film's 65,000 frames is an oil painting on canvas, made with rotoscoping animation by a team of 125 artists from around the world using the same techniques as Van Gogh.
- Because the artists painted over frames once they had been photographed, only 1,000 of the 65,000 paintings produced for the film survived.
- Loving Vincent, which is based on the life and death of Vincent van Gogh, is the first fully painted animated feature film.
- The project took six years to complete; co-director Hugh Welchman said the filmmakers had "definitely without a doubt invented the slowest form of filmmaking ever devised in 120 years".
- The film marked Helen McCrory's final film role; the actress, who appeared in the cast, died in April 2021.
