Plot summary
Julian's grandmother, Grandmère, visits from Paris while he is struggling to fit in at the school he moved to after his expulsion from Beecher Prep. She answers with her own story. In 1942 she was Sara Blum, a frivolous Jewish girl living with her parents, Max and Rose, in France's unoccupied zone. When the Nazis extend their occupation, the family plans to leave the country, and Sara slips away from a Gestapo roundup at her school. Her classmate Julien Beaumier, whose leg was paralyzed by polio, is the one who helps her; his parents, Vivienne and Jean-Paul, hide her in a barn beside their house. Julien, whom Sara and her classmates once shunned, goes over his school lessons with her each night, and the Beaumiers warn her she must never go outside.
