Plot summary
After a childhood spent in the African wilderness with her zoologist parents, sixteen-year-old Cady Heron enters North Shore High School for the first time. The hallways and their unwritten rules are new to her, and she has no idea how to read them. Janis Ian and Damian Leigh, two students on the outside of the school's social order, befriend her and explain who matters: the Plastics, a trio made up of Regina George, the group's leader, her follower Gretchen Wieners and Karen Smith. When the Plastics take an interest in Cady and invite her to join them, Janis sees a chance to get inside the group. Cady, meanwhile, has fallen for her classmate Aaron Samuels, and learns that he is Regina's ex-boyfriend.

- Tina Fey named several characters after real people in her life for convenience, including lead character Cady Heron after her college roommate Cady Garey and Damian Leigh after her high school friend Damian Holbrook, who later became a TV Guide writer.
- The character Janis Ian is named after singer Janis Ian, one of the two musical guests on the very first Saturday Night Live episode; her song 'At Seventeen' plays in the background during the fight scene at Regina's house.
- Lindsay Lohan was originally cast as villain Regina George, but the studio worried the mean-girl role would alienate her fanbase, so she switched to playing lead character Cady Heron instead.
- Rachel McAdams originally auditioned for lead role Cady but was judged too old for the part and was cast as villain Regina George instead; Kristen Stewart, Michelle Trachtenberg and Mae Whitman were also considered for Cady.
- Jonathan Bennett became a last-minute replacement as Aaron Samuels after the actor originally cast in the role was fired; James Franco, Penn Badgley, Jared Padalecki and Max Minghella had all been considered or auditioned for the part.
