Plot summary
Olivia Lawrence, a young heiress, comes home to Southampton, Long Island, after her mother dies. At a party she meets Tim Whalen, captain of Granger Morrison's racing sailboat Obsession, and agrees to go sailing with him aboard Masquerade, the boat her late father left. Tim is also involved with Brooke, Granger's wife. Olivia's alcoholic stepfather, Tony Gateworth, shares her house with his girlfriend, Anne Briscoe; the will of Olivia's mother gives him the run of eight family properties and a yearly million dollars that does not stretch to cover his gambling losses. Olivia cannot turn him out and dislikes him. Gateworth, once a sailing rival of Tim, insults him and demands that Tim leave Olivia alone. Olivia and Tim start dating, and she tells her aunt she feels comfortable with him.

- Masquerade was originally titled Dying for Love; MGM mandated the change during production, and writer Dick Wolf said the studio was nervous because a series of AIDS-awareness condom ads had equated making love with death.
- Rob Lowe pushed for his then-girlfriend Melissa Gilbert to take the lead role in Masquerade, but she was not cast despite his backing.
- Meg Tilly said she had never done a love scene before and found it hard to do, and that director Bob Swaim gave quite a bit of direction during those scenes.
- Masquerade was the first American film by Bob Swaim, an American director who had forged his career in France and found success with La Balance.
