Plot summary
Fifteen and restless, Connie Wyatt spends the summer at her family's farmhouse, where her mother, Katherine, finds fault with her while praising her older sister, June, and her father, Harry stays out of the quarrels. Connie escapes to the mall with her friends Laura and Jill and flirts with boys; when a date turns into heavy petting, she gets out of the boy's car. At a hamburger drive-in, a man watches her and calls out that he is watching. After an argument over her nights out ends in a slap, Connie stays home while the family attends a barbecue. A convertible painted with the name Arnold Friend pulls up, and its driver says he knows the family's plans and has been watching her.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Smooth Talk grew out of Joyce Carol Oates' short story "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?", which was itself inspired by the Tucson murders committed by Charles Schmid.
- Laura Dern was not cast until two weeks before filming began, an unusually late point at which to sign the actress in the lead role.
