Florence Eldridge
Biography
Florence Eldridge was an American actress whose career took in stage and screen. Born in Brooklyn, she attended public schools before making her Broadway debut at seventeen in the chorus of Rock-a-Bye Baby at the Astor Theatre. During the 1920s she gained notice in Six Characters in Search of an Author and The Cat and the Canary. In 1957 she received a Tony Award nomination for the play Long Day's Journey into Night. She appeared in The Divorcee (1930) and played Fantine in Les Misérables (1935), then took the role of Elizabeth Tudor in Mary of Scotland (1936). She later played Sarah Brady in Inherit the Wind (1960). In 1965 she took part in a world tour sponsored by the U.S. State Department, presenting excerpts from plays on a bare stage.
