Plot summary
At a school in St. Louis, Finn is the new student, and the bullies there torment him daily until he feels hopeless. He comes upon Marshall, a Labrador retriever held in deplorable conditions on an isolated ranch, one of 60 dogs kept penned up by an animal hoarder. The other dogs there have attacked him, and he is badly hurt. Finn wants to rescue him, but the dog has been abused and needs a vet right away. In Marshall's plight Finn recognizes his own: each is bullied, and each is brave. The friendship between the boy and the dog takes hold at once.
