Plot summary
A veteran and recovering alcoholic, Red Miller works as a lumberjack in the Pacific Northwest in 1983. He shares a cabin with his girlfriend, Mandy Bloom, an artist who makes fantasy art and works at a gas station. On her way to work, Mandy catches the eye of Jeremiah Sand, the leader of a religious cult called the Children of the New Dawn. Sand tells his followers that he must have her, and his disciple Brother Swan is sent to bring her in. Swan calls on the Black Skulls, a gang of bikers who live on LSD, and they demand one of the cult's own as payment. The gang forces its way into the cabin and subdues the couple.

- Cosmatos pointed Jóhannsson towards Queen's Flash Gordon soundtrack and Van Halen's Fair Warning, but the score referenced neither, ending up a dark, massive, industrial-metal sound with Stephen O'Malley of Sunn O))) playing guitars.
- The weapon that Red forges in the film was based on the "F" from the logo for the extreme metal band Celtic Frost.
- Composer Jóhann Jóhannsson died on February 9, 2018, before his work on the film was finished; the remainder of his cues were curated and produced by Pepijn Caudron and Yair Elazar Glotman.
